Light Night at Leeds Libraries

Colourful Plastic Tubes running through bookcases at different heights to make a marble run. Pink and blue fabric hung on rails to make a den

As part of Leeds’s commitment to children and play, the two night spectacle of Light Night 2022 was themed around a playful city, featuring fun illuminations and activities for all ages. We were delighted to be a part of the extravaganza this year featuring our Marvelous Marble Run in Leeds Children's Library.

The Marble Run features everyday household objects and things destined for landfill to create constructive experiences for all ages. We encourage people to move the pipes around and experiment with the hight, length and position of the run.

The Libraries team did a great job of setting up, hiding marble run parts in amongst the bookshelves and propping up the parts on towers of books! This really brought the library to life and gave people of all ages a chance to immerse themselves in the stories on the shelves.

The Senior Librarian for Children and Young People commented

“‘It was brilliant to see some many families coming in to Central Library as a place that they can pause and escape the big crowds outside. Families loved the marble run, creating their own designs and testing what worked and what didn’t, it proved to be an intergenerational team task. My favourite moment was when a group of children created an incredible game with the equipment. Almost turning it in to a giant pinball with a different score depending where the ball ended up. Children were able to discover exciting books as part of their play, the den gave them a safe space to sit a read.”

Massive thanks to the team at Leeds Children's Library for facilitating this amazing event.
